At All Animal Care Clinic and Veterinary Surgery and Sports Medicine of the Gorge, we've seen our share of heart-wrenching cases—but it’s the recoveries that inspire us every day. Here are three unforgettable stories of resilience, healing, and the power of compassionate care.

UNO
Uno – A New Life on Three Legs
Uno, a German Shepherd, came into the shelter the picture of neglect—malnourished, terrified, and suffering from a fractured leg that had been left untreated for an unknown period of time. His spirit was broken, and so was his body. Dr. White and Dr. Peterson quickly took action. With no way to save the damaged limb, the team performed an amputation to give Uno the best chance at a pain-free life. The transformation was remarkable. Uno blossomed into a joyful, energetic companion who now lives life to the fullest—running, chasing balls, playing with toys, and walking proudly on three strong legs. -
ARLO
Arlo – A Therapy Dog’s Fight Against Cancer
Arlo is more than a dog—he’s a healer. As a Certified Therapy Dog, through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, in the Columbia River Gorge, Arlo brings comfort to children in schools, veterans in hospitals, and anyone in need of a little extra love. When he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the scapula, it was our turn to care for him. Dr. Petersen performed a successful subtotal scapulactomy, removing the tumor, and Dr. White facilitated the creation of a custom cancer vaccine through Torigen. This innovative treatment is designed to help Arlo’s immune system fight any remaining cancer cells. Now, Arlo is thriving once more—back on his rounds, spreading joy, and proving every day that dogs possess incredible strength and resilience. -
CLETUS
Cletus – From Cold Woods to Warm Hearts
In the dead of winter, tiny Cletus and his four littermates were found abandoned in the woods near Hood River—weak, malnourished, and fighting to survive. A Good Samaritan found them and contacted local authorities, who brought the puppies to safety. Cletus, in addition to being in poor condition from extreme malnourishment, was suffering from a painful paraphimosis. Our team was able to resolve the condition and nurse him back to health. Today, Cletus is a thriving, playful puppy with a bright future, reminding us all of the importance of a second chance.
